The biggest sporting event by far in 2010 is the World Cup to be held in South Africa. The World Cup is like the Olympics of football. Football is by far the most popular sport in the world and the anticipation for the Cup, even though it’s months away, is already building and being talked about on a daily basis. Drama has already begun to unfold as France illegally qualifies after the hand ball by Thierry Henry thus knocking Ireland out of the competition. England played qualifiers brilliantly earning them a top seeded spot with America, Algeria and Slovenia in their group. Despite most England fans breathing a sigh of relief with the rest of the group under England, the Yanks have made it clear that they will be no pushover.
As you’d expect, the closer we get to the June 11 2010 kickoff the worldwide coverage will only increase dramatically. Nostalgia for games past will mean seeing great World Cup moments from the past as well as highlights of this year’s squads and predictions of which teams should make it to the quarters and which teams may cause upsets. Arsenal’s Past – A Brief History

Arsenal FC is one of England’s most popular team of late. The team was founded in 1886 by a group of Woolwich artillery workers in south London. Originally the clubs name wasn’t Arsenal at all, rather they were called Dial Square. Shortly afterwards they were renamed to Royal Arsenal which was perhaps more befitting of its founding fathers. However, as Arsenal became a professional team, they were renamed once again this time calling themselves Woolwich Arsenal.
It wasn’t long after turning professional that the Woolwich name was eliminated naming the club as we know it today. Many people referred to the club now as The Arsenal but in fact, this was not the official name. In 1893 Arsenal FC played in the second division of the Football League but less than a decade later in 1904 they were promoted to the first division. At first Arsenal played relatively well but unfortunately were knocked back to the second division after almost 10 years of playing in the first.
Arsenal played for almost 3 decades in Plumstead, South London but eventually moved to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London. It was believed that if Arsenal moved to north London they would have better chance at success. Sir Henry Norris inspire the club’s move and success did begin to come from the team as they nearly made it back to the first division the very next season.
Sometimes we forget that the great teams of today all had to start somewhere and usually with modest beginnings. Arsenal surely is one of those teams with an interesting past.
